Simple Zero Waste Cleaning Swaps

If you’ve been following along with our blog series so far, you’ll know that each month in 2020 we are featuring a Zero Waste Swap of the Month! We want to help make the transition to a lower-waste lifestyle easier, by showing one small change that can be made at a time, rather than tackling it all at once.

The Zero Waste Swap we’ve decided to feature for the month of April is the DIY Cleaning Spray Bottle!

Did you know that enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the Earth four times? A large portion of that plastic waste is household waste, including plastic bottles for cleaning products and supplies.

By making your own natural cleaning products at home, you not only save yourself and your family from potentially harmful chemicals, but you also save all of the plastic that you would have had to purchase at the store. And by reusing the same bottle over and over, you’ll never have to buy a plastic bottle for cleaning products ever again!

An amber or cobalt glass bottle is a great option for a reusable cleaning spray bottle because the dark color of the glass preserves the potency of essential oils, which are an amazing addition to any DIY cleaning recipe. They not only smell great, but certain oils also have inherently powerful properties that aid in cleaning:

Lemon is naturally antiviral, and helps cut grease. It’s perfect for kitchen and bathroom cleaners!

Tea Tree (Melaleuca) is naturally antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, AND antiviral. What a powerhouse! It’s a perfect addition to an all-purpose cleaning spray, and can also be used to fight mildew in the bathroom.

Thyme is known for its powerful antibacterial properties. Use it in a higher concentration in your kitchen or bathroom cleaner for an extra powerful clean!

Lavender is well known for relieving stress, but it also helps to prevent the buildup of mold and mildew. It makes for a great fabric freshener spray because of its natural antibacterial and anti-odor properties.

Our 16 oz Cobalt Blue Glass Spray Bottle is excellent for DIY cleaning with essential oils. It even has 5 non-toxic, all natural, homemade cleaning recipes printed right on the side: Heavy Duty, All-Purpose, Veggie Wash, Granite, and Glass Cleaner.

Use unpaper towels, rags, or old t-shirts alongside your DIY cleaning spray, and you can enjoy your clean home with a clean conscience thanks to your waste-free cleaning routine!
